Recruit volunteers and students, coordinate preservice and in-service training for tutors, provide training materials, coordinate literacy, GED and ESOL efforts, maintain a toll-free number and Web site, increase public awareness and expand capacity of literacy councils. We operate four councils (and plan a fifth in the Haines City area), made up of volunteer tutors, and each has a board of community representatives. Literacy councils provide one-on-one training for adults who cannot read, need to improve reading skills, need the basics to apply for GED or for whom English is a second language.
