Clerk of Courts Keeps Records
The Clerk of Courts office maintains all official records for Polk County's courts.
Other duties include serving as auditor and accountant to the Polk County Commission.
In August 1997, then-Gov. Lawton Chiles appointed Richard M. Weiss as Polk County clerk of the Circuit Court. Since then, Weiss has been re-elected four times without opposition for four-year terms.
Weiss' employees process civil and criminal cases. They archive court documents, ranging from criminal indictments to marriage licenses, wills and traffic citations.
With the exception of juvenile records and specific records sealed by judges or by law, many of the clerk's records are open to the public.
Some other responsibilities include:
Recruiting prospective jurors.
Maintaining evidence entered by the court.
Conducting mortgage foreclosure sales.
Assisting victims who apply for injunctions for protection.
Processing applications for divorce and small claims cases.
