CUISINE AND ATMOSPHERE: No-frills home-style food served in a dining room that feels like your grandma's place.

WHAT'S NEW: The restaurant has been on Memorial Boulevard for about two years. A new location called Corn Bread Alley at 2019 W. Memorial Blvd., Lakeland, opened in January. Different name, same menu.

WHAT I LIKED: Their chicken stew served atop white rice is a simple and tasty meal served in a big portion for a good price, $6.95. Also good is the homemade meatloaf. When it comes to sides, skip the run-of-the-mill collard greens and mashed potatoes and go straight for the fried corn bread. It's a perfect mix of sweet and savory. For dessert, try a piece of their lemon meringue pie. It lacks a personal touch on an old favorite but is nonetheless satisfying.

PRICE RANGE: $4.95 to $9.99.

FYI: The restaurant offers all-you-can-eat fish for $7.95 for pollock and $8.95 for catfish Fridays and Saturdays starting at 3 p.m.
